Underdeveloped Identities

Double Indemnity, a novel by James M. Cain, tells the boloney of Walter Huff, an average man and experienced insurance salesman who finds his way into a dangerous and risky string of events when the focus of his ordinary fellowship call is unexpectedly diverted. Unable to avoid the seduction of Phyllis Nirdlinger, the lymph glands wife, Walter indulges himself in plotting the murder of Mr. Nirdlinger enticed by greed and love. In literature, characterization allows subscribers to empathize with the protagonist and secondary characters, and thus show that what is casualty to these people in the taradiddle is vicariously occurrent to them. It gives credibility or the impression of living reality. Characterization moves the reputation along by putting fascinating characters in exhausting situations. This fast paced novel filled with lust and desire leads its readers through and through a captivating journey of sporadic relationships, blossom decisions, and inconceivable crime. However, this story lacks a necessary depth and growing of its characters as the story progresses, proving to have an affect on the plot, and deviation readers repeatedly asking the question why? Cains baron to success liberaly utilize rhetorical devices such as mental imagery in his descriptions of the Nirdlingers home, foreshadowing when he refers to the home as a House of Death (Cain 3), and metaphors to represent the artificiality of the setting at the sorb of the novel may lead readers to believe that the enactment of characters would in like manner be strong. However, Cain fails to introduce his characters to the readers. A specific example of this is that the reader is brought directly into the uniformity and nakedness of Walter Huffs general life without any footing story as to who he is as a person. To be more specific, Cain narrates Walters thoughts as Walter describes his job.
